Life in the UK
Here are some excerpts of the stories we have collected from our visitors:

Today I have been here for 4 years, I work as a security guard, and my life is very different than in Sudan as there I was an academic and respected. All my family are in Sudan and I can’t get to see them, and miss them so much.  I haven’t seen my parents since I left and probably won’t see them again.  I miss my familiar surroundings and the things I grew up with and my friends too.

In the UK I am safe and secure and I like living in the UK, I wish I didn’t have to be here as I would like to be with my family, but I am settling here, I like Swindon, I like its people.

The Harbour is a good place for me to visit, I can socialise, laugh, speak my language and I have made lots of friends here, and the people who help in there have very big hearts. Harbour Visitor

I am not allowed to work, but I so want to put back into the community that has given me so much since I have been here, I want to feel like a normal person and go out to work everyday, I hate picking up Home Office support and not working for it, it’s the same as begging.

But I know what ever happens I know I have the support and friendship of the Harbour and its volunteers. Harbour Visitor

I am living in England, I am integrating into society well, English people have been very caring to me. I love England and I thank the people and the Government for giving me a safe place and the opportunity to have a life.

The Harbour Project has given me the hope, dignity, advice and learning/education, I have volunteered and learned so much, it’s a friendly environment, social and lots of laughter there, as well as other people who have real problems with their lives and past lives and some worse than mine, but in the Harbour we are one, we can talk and help.

I miss my father, brothers and sisters a great deal, they are constantly on my mind I wonder what they are doing, how my village is and the people there, and I often wonder if I will ever see them again.

I hope one day there will be peace in my country and my true wish is to see my family, village and my country again one day. Harbour Project
