When I first joined the Harbour, my perception of refugees, is that they had an easy life, just as the media portray them. But in reality, I see first hand how life is here in the UK for them. A different language, culture, weather, laws and the worry about being sent back to their countries and fearing imprisonment and death at times.
To see them settle in, learn English, learn about the culture here, to see them relax and see their confidence grow daily through the Harbour’s support and efforts on their behalf.
Without the hearts of the volunteers who not only give their free time also give out of their own pockets, the Harbour couldn’t survive, and the clients of the Harbour would be isolated in the community. Harbour Volunteer
Immigration is a difficult and contentious issue. The debate is characterized by ignorance, misinformation and prejudice. Successive governments have not helped by pandering to those prejudices in order to try to obtain electoral advantage. The British people however, are far more tolerant and understanding than they are often given credit for and their sense of fairness is a constant source of inspiration. This is the case with the Harbour Project people from all sorts of backgrounds respond to the plight of Refugees and Asylum seekers and are selfless in responding to the problems faced by these very vulnerable people. I am hugely proud of our achievements here in Swindon and look forward to our continued efforts on their behalf in the town. Chair of Trustees, Harbour Project
